so many new tunes
we drove up from brooklyn and it was a scene .. back in the day when the only place to hear the tunes was live as they hadn't made it to vinyl yet .. not until skull & roses soloo garcia & weir and europe 72 .. this show had about 17 unrecorded tunes .. in addition since so many were new the energy was so fresh and vibrant .. also this was the short phase of post-mickey pre-keith with just the very tight core 5 .. 50 years ago and i'd forgotten was a great show it was

Pigpen
definitely on his game here, and the band is at the top level in response. as stated below H2H= price of admission.
then Empty Pages will break your heart and take you on a (Death Don't Have No Mercy?) trip.
this entire show is the band at one if it's highest peaks !!

Tambourine on St. Stephen!
Never heard that before. The groove is so straight, so 70s pop like on St. Stephen. Great!
Haven't listened to anything else on the show yet. So, my 4 stars are JUST FOR THE FREAKIN' TAMBOURINE ON St. Stephen. Heh.

tracks
The Hard To Handle alone is worth the price of admission. Pigpen really shines in the first set, with 5 out of 14 songs; the same as Jerry and one more than Bob!
This is also the first time I've heard Weir, not Garcia, sing "wish I was a headlight..." (Rider).
And the 'Miracle of Saint Stephen'! Love it!
but...
What is the purpose of segregating 14 seconds of drums and making it a separate track? It should be part of The Other One track.

Could Be Good If You Don't Do First Sets And If...
...the recording was not so trashy throughout most of it. It goes in and out and the bass is totally distorted.
But there are some real toasty versions of quite a few songs and the recording does even out adequately enough to bring about a very fine second set.
Punchy Sugar Mag and rockin Good Lovin. The Pigpen songs are a hoot. Last time for "Empty Pages" which fairly cooks. Interesting Jerry rhythm patterns on Truckin.' Notice the small instrumental break that they take after Truckin.
Decent Other One and a sweet Bobby McGee with polished and subtle Pig keys in the background. Uncle John's is a crisper's choice for this show -- very well done.
